Empowering Single Mothers: Dream Center Indianapolis Receives $4.7 Million TANF Grant to Disrupt and Reverse the Cycle of Poverty

June 21st, 2024

In a groundbreaking move to break the cycle of poverty in Marion County, the Dream Center Indianapolis has been awarded a substantial $4.7 million TANF grant. This grant aims to build a strategic alliance to launch the innovative Dream Center Pathway Program, designed to uplift 200 single mothers in the Crooked Creek Community.

Central Indiana has nearly 20,000 nonprofits dedicated to saving lives and supporting those in crisis. Yet, many at-risk and vulnerable families, especially single mothers, remain underserved and without a pathway to stability. The Dream Center Indianapolis seeks to bridge this gap by focusing on the ALICE population—Asset Limited, income-constrained, Employed. These hardworking women often juggle multiple jobs to make ends meet yet may earn $30,000 or less annually. Our mission is to partner with them, providing the wraparound support they need to thrive.

The Pathway Program, a 40-week initiative, is the cornerstone of this partnership. Divided into four transformative phases, the program will guide single mothers toward securing a career with a starting annual salary of $50,000, provide financial coaching to help them purchase their first home, and offer comprehensive access to health and wellness services.

The grant to the Dream Center Indianapolis is from a portion of the Indiana TANF Block Grant and was awarded by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA), Division of Family Resources (DFR) through a proposal review process. Each U.S. State receives an annual block grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Temporary Assistance to Needy Families programs (TANF) which provide basic income support for the neediest families who meet citizenship, work and other eligibility criteria, and to support service programs designed to help bring such families out of poverty or prevent them from falling into poverty.

With the support of this grant, the Dream Center Indianapolis will empower 200 single mothers, guiding them from poverty to prosperity. This initiative is not just about immediate relief—it’s about creating lasting, evidence-based change that ensures these families can thrive for generations to come.
