At A10 Associates, every team member brings a unique perspective and a wealth of experience to the table. Today, we’re spotlighting T.J. Werner, Associate Vice President of Research and Grant Writing, whose background in diplomacy, international relations, and research has shaped his approach to policy, grant proposals, and client success.
From global experiences to deep dives into new industries, T.J.’s journey has been anything but conventional. But at the heart of it all? A commitment to learning, resilience, and making an impact.
A Journey Through Diplomacy, Research, and Opportunity
Before stepping into the world of research and grant writing at A10 Associates, T.J.’s career was a mosaic of different experiences. His professional path took him through think tanks, asset tracing, NGOs, and even government roles. Most recently, he worked at the U.S. Foreign Service Institute, supporting French language and political training for U.S. Foreign Service Officers and Civil Servants.
Academically, T.J.’s two master’s degrees in International Relations/Diplomacy and War Studies reflect his deep fascination with global affairs. While his initial goal was to see the world, he quickly became engrossed in the intricacies of cross-cultural communication and the art of diplomacy. To him, War Studies was simply “the other side of the coin”—a necessary counterpart to understanding the dynamics of international relations.
But his move into grant writing? That was an unexpected leap.
“I took a chance,” T.J. recalls. “I stumbled across A10 Associates one night on LinkedIn, and the work really interested me. I had experience with research and had drafted grant proposals during an internship in Kenya, but I’d never done a full grant application. I applied, took the risk—and now, here I am.”

Expanding Horizons at A10 Associates
Since joining A10 Associates, T.J. has embraced every opportunity to learn and grow. His work involves conducting research, writing policy memos, and assisting with grant applications—all while ensuring clients have the insights they need to succeed.
One of the most exciting aspects of his role? Exploring industries he hadn’t previously studied.
“I never focused much on technology and transportation before, but now I’m deep into researching these areas,” he says. “Every project challenges me to expand my knowledge in ways I never expected.”
Beyond the subject matter, A10’s fast-paced environment has pushed T.J. to refine his skills and adapt to the team’s high standards for deliverables. Every day presents new challenges, and that’s what keeps the work exciting.
A Philosophy Rooted in Purpose and Perseverance
For T.J., motivation comes from something deeply personal: his family.
“My father passed away when I was 15, and my mother is the most important person in my life,” he shares. “I approach my work with one goal—to make them proud.”

“Non Nobis Tantum Nati”—We are not born only for ourselves.
Professionally, he draws inspiration from both his father and his mentors—including his CEO at A10 Associates and a professor from his undergraduate years, Sally Shelton-Colby, a former ambassador.
Balancing Work, Life, and Constant Growth
In the midst of deadlines and research, T.J. prioritizes maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
“I always block off time in the evenings to decompress,” he says. “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is my go-to, but I also love cooking, exploring Boston, and catching up with friends.”

“Don’t be afraid of the process. It’s going to be tough, it’s going to scare you, and there will be moments when you want to quit. But you’re here for a reason. Every decision you’ve ever made has led you to this moment. Trust it.”
And if you ever need proof that life can take you in unexpected directions? Consider this:
T.J. speaks three languages, has lived in five countries, and has stood on six continents. Not bad for someone who once took a chance on a job listing he found late at night.
At A10 Associates, T.J. Werner is more than just a researcher or grant writer—he’s a lifelong learner, a dedicated team member, and someone who is always ready to take the next leap.
